Forgotten Liverpool star could be about to solve their biggest problem

Liverpool fans thought that their team were going to be sorted for the next few years after their £450 million spend last summer.

However, if anything, they actually managed to get worse.

This then led to a rather disappointing season for Arne Slot's men with Andoni Iraola having to spend another £150 million to try and plug the gaps.

And, while some deals for players such as Jeremy Jacquet and Ronald Araujo have worked out for the better, there are still some obvious areas among the Reds' ranks that need upgrading.

But, since the transfer window is now shut until January, Iraola may have to get creative and try out a couple of options from his current crop of players instead of venturing into the market.

Joe Gomez could become Liverpool's new left-back in the short-term

Milos Kerkez and Kostas Tsimikas have easily been Liverpool's worst performers this season.

Both left-backs have failed to meet expectations when called upon with each of them causing Liverpool to go behind their opponents at certain points in the season.

In fact, Tsimikas performed so badly against Fulham on Saturday that he was hooked at half-time by Iraola.

The lack of form shown by Tsimikas and Kerkez has left fans wondering why on earth Andy Robertson was ever let go with some even demanding that a new left-back or two are signed in January.

However, until then, the Reds are going to have to stick it out with what they have.

But, if Kerkez and Tsimikas continue failing to meet expectations, then Iraola may have to call upon Joe Gomez to plug the gap.

Now that the Englishman is back from injury, his versatility can be of massive use to Liverpool.

Gomez can play anywhere across the back four and, back in the day before all of his injuries, he could have easily been seen as one of the Premier League's best defenders.

Obviously, he's now entered the final year of his contract so, by June 2027, he could be gone.

But for now, as long as he's fit, there's no harm in at least giving him a chance to become Liverpool's first-choice left-back, especially after his 45-minute cameo versus Tottenham on Tuesday evening.

Joe Gomez would help provide more defensive stability for Liverpool

One of the main issues that Liverpool faces last season was keeping goals out of their net.

Alisson and Giorgi Mamardashvili both tried their best to stop as much getting past them as possible but, if we're honest, Mamardashvili's performances were rather shocking too.

So, this was obviously a recipe for disaster and, with the injuries suffered by Conor Bradley, Gomez and Giovanni Leoni, Liverpool hardly had any depth in their defence.

This meant that all of their players were used as much and as often as possible which obviously won't end well for anyone.

However, with Gomez now back and ready to fight for his place, he could add some much needed defensive stability to Iraola's starting XI.

As mentioned, Kerkez and Tsimikas are practically mistakes waiting to happen so, as long as Gomez stays fit, the extra defensive ability he brings to the team could prove vital.

Here's hoping Liverpool give him a go and that he can prove he can still be as good as he once was.
