Liverpool have spent a lot of time and money improving their centre-back options in recent windows.

The renewal process kicked off in summer 2025 with the acquisition of Giovanni Leoni in a £26m deal from Parma. Further signings in the area have since been made in the shape of Ifeanyi Ndukwe, Mor Talla Ndiaye and of course Jeremy Jacquet.

The Reds have also recruited Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan from Barcelona with an option to sign the Uruguayan for £47m at the end of the current campaign.

Van Dijk and Gomez now on track to leave

Those movements will leave the futures of Joe Gomez and especially Virgil van Dijk in doubt. Both are out of contract at the end of the season and right it now it doesn’t appear new deals are on the horizon.

That’s according to a new report in Football Insider - which claims both Gomez and Van Dijk are now on track to LEAVE Anfield at the end of the season.

Liverpool moving on from VVD

“Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are both on course to leave Liverpool when their contracts come to an end next June,” the report reads.

“Van Dijk seems more likely to pen a new deal at some point this season, but neither player is set to remain at Anfield for the next campaign if nothing changes.”

Van Dijk, 35, has been a colossus since joining the Reds from Southampton for £75m back in 2018. He has led the club to multiple major honours - extending his deal until 2027 on £400k per week a couple of seasons ago.

Strong market for Van Dijk next summer

Due to turn 36 before next season kicks off it appears as though sporting director Julian Ward and head coach Andoni Iraola are now ready to move on from the Dutch legend.

His close friend Gomez, 29, has struggled with injuries throughout his time at the club although when fit is a useful squad option. The England defender however now looks set to depart on a free alongside Van Dijk.

Virgil will no doubt attract attention in the market as a free agent with the likes of Real Madrid, AC Milan and Turkish sides Galatasaray and Fenerbahce all linked in recent months.
