Andoni Iraola can hijack £51m deal, it makes so much sense for Liverpool

Andoni Iraola still has a lot of work to do at Liverpool.

Even though the Spaniard was one of the main driving forces behind Victor Munoz's transfer, a fair few players still need to be added to Liverpool's first-team squad.

The lack of depth among the Reds' ranks is a major cause for concern with their defence being a particular problem area.

Luke Chambers has been playing as a centre-back for most of the Reds' pre-season tour of the USA which just proves how unprepared Iraola's men are.

Indeed, they should have Joe Gomez and Jeremy Jacquet available but, within the first 10 minutes of Liverpool's opening pre-season game against Sunderland, Gomez got injured and Jacquet still hasn't returned to full fitness from his dislocated shoulder.

And, now that there's only around a month left in the summer window, time is running out for useful deals to be struck.

So, hijacking other teams' moves may be the only way that Liverpool get a deal over the line this summer and, right now, there's a perfect player for them to try and sign.

As Liverpool fans will already know, their attack isn't anywhere near as strong as it needs to be.

Mohamed Salah has left and, since Richard Hughes didn't replace Luis Diaz after his exit last summer, they're massively lacking in depth.

Hardly any of Liverpool's players have that clinical touch that you need to be a Premier League player and, even though Salah wasn't at his best last term, he still contributed to 22 goals across all competitions.

This isn't an easy number of contributions to replace, especially with how many top-class players there are in England's top flight.

However, replacing the Egyptian King is likely to be one of the Reds' main priorities this summer which is why Hughes making a move for Ajax's Mika Godts makes an awful lot of sense.

At the moment, Paris Saint-Germain are the ones leading the race for the £51m Belgian with the Champions League winners eyeing him as a potential replacement for Bradley Barcola.

Last term, he was one of Ajax's best-performing attackers as he managed to contribute to 32-goals across all competitions.

Indeed, the Belgian's best position is on the left wing so the Reds would have to figure out where he'd fit in but, on the face of things, he looks like an ideal player for Liverpool to sign.

Liverpool's entire fanbase knows that change is still needed at Anfield.

Indeed, some additions have already been made by the Anfield outfit which will certainly improve their chances of doing better but, if Munoz and Jacquet are the only players that get brought in, they'll probably end up doing even worse than they did during the 2025-26 season.

This would be far from ideal, especially for Iraola's first season in charge of the club.

Most areas among Liverpool's ranks could do with an upgrade or two and, after their pre-season tour of the USA, it's clear that the Reds are more desperate than fans first thought.

Another overhaul of Liverpool's ranks was mooted this summer with talk before the window even claiming that another five or more players could be brought in.

Indeed, transfers from other clubs may have stopped this from happening but, it still feels like another player or two should have already been brought in.

There's obviously no knowing what the next month or so has in store for Liverpool but, if they don't get a move on soon, they're definitely going to be left behind by their title rivals.
