Andoni Iraola confirms Liverpool superstar could leave
Andoni Iraola has confirmed a Liverpool superstar could be on the move.
The Spaniard knew what he was getting into when he took the reins at Anfield. It's a difficult period for Liverpool at the moment.
The Reds were once at the pinnacle of football. Right now, though, they are nowhere near.
There's an exciting squad in place with a lot of future superstars. However, the squad still has a fair few holes that need to be fixed before it is ready to compete against the very best teams on the planet.
Iraola is in charge of making sure this transition goes smoothly. He has to implement a playing style that is easy to comprehend and integrate the young players who will play a key role in the future of the club.
Meet Liverpool's next generation
It's fair to say Iraola has done a good job at this so far. Liverpool are definitely playing with a distinct style again, and there is a lot of promise we've seen in Iraola's philosophy so far.
Ultimately, Liverpool's best players this season have also predominantly been the youngsters. Jeremy Jacquet caught the eye as soon as he arrived at Anfield.
Lewis Koumas has been brilliant off the bench with his fervent energy and constant movement.
More recently, in the last few weeks, Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni have been Liverpool's best players on the pitch. Both of them have shone with their technical ability and footballing IQ.
Both of them also have the potential to be world-class footballers. It's fair to say Nyoni, Ngumoha and Jacquet are the future of the Reds.
Iraola confirms Alisson leaving is a possibility
But there is also a changing of the guard at Anfield. Liverpool have already said goodbye to a lot of key players in recent years and it looks like more could follow soon next summer.
Alisson, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, the last vestiges of Jurgen Klopp's golden era at the club, all have expiring contracts at the end of the season.
It was the former who Iraola was quizzed about in his pre-match press conference ahead of Liverpool's trip to Crystal Palace. When asked about Alisson's future, Iraola refused to rule out that leaving was not on the cards.
“I don’t know if this will be Alisson's last season. That is a question you have to ask him. I hope not, I hope he continues with us for more time," Iraola said.
“But, when you ask me about contracts and these situations, it is a matter for the players and the club.”
The fact that Iraola doesn't know at this stage is a confirmation that Alisson could leave the club. The final decision is up to him and Julian Ward.
