Ian Wright has backed Liverpool to come out on top against Manchester City in their Premier League showdown this weekend, but admitted he'd prefer it if both teams could lose.

Jurgen Klopp's side sit top of the table on 63 points after 27 games, one ahead of reigning champions City in second.

In what could be a season-defining moment, Liverpool face City at Anfield in a potential title showdown this Sunday.

However, prior to that clash, third-placed Arsenal will take on Brentford and the Gunners have the chance to jump into first, at least briefly, with a win.

The weekend offers a golden chance for the Gunners to gain ground in the title race, with at least one of their rivals set to drop points.

Arsenal legend Wright has admitted that with all eyes on Anfield this Sunday he'd like to see both Liverpool and City lose, in order to give his old club the best chance of success.

Speaking on the Kelly and Wrighty Show, the former striker joked: "I’ve just had a crazy thought – can both of them lose? That came into my head. Can both lose for Arsenal, please?"

However, Wright did ultimately back the Reds to come through this weekend's challenge.

He continued: "But no, you look at it from Liverpool’s point of view, is it at the Etihad? It’s at Anfield! Liverpool at this stage, I would fancy Liverpool, I would do."

Liverpool have lost just one of their last 20 home Premier League games against City, with the only defeat since 2003 coming in the form of a 4-1 reverse during the 2020/21 season.

Since Pep Guardiola's arrival, the Reds have won four out of seven league games at Anfield against City.
