The proof that Alexander Isak was worth £125 million

Alexander Isak didn’t hit the ground running like many hoped he would following a £125 million move from Newcastle last summer.

The Swede failed to settle into Arne Slot’s side and then suffered a serious injury that saw him out of action for several months.

Most supporters saw that it was too soon to fairly judge the striker, and now that patience is paying off.

The 27-year-old has started the season in fine form, with four goals in his first five games for Liverpool, and played a crucial role in Sweden’s 2-1 win over Romania in the UEFA Nations League on Friday.

When Liverpool committed a British transfer record spend on Isak in the summer of 2025, it was clear that the Reds’ recruitment team viewed the striker as one of the best players in the world.

Isak was coming off the back of a season in which he had scored 21 goals in 30 games for Newcastle, and helped the Magpies to their first domestic trophy 70 years, and many believed he would take Slot’s Premier League winning side to the next level.

Judging solely off last season you would say that Isak wasn’t worth even half the fee that Liverpool paid, but the first six weeks of this campaign have shown that Richard Hughes may have been absolutely right to splash the cash.

Isak’s cool finish to put his nation 1-0 on Friday night was just another reminder of what he is capable of, and Andoni Iraola will have been encouraged to see the striker’s form continue onto the international stage.

One of the biggest tasks the Spaniard faced when he took the job in Liverpool’s dugout was getting the Reds’ biggest stars firing again, and he certainly seems to be succeeding with Isak.

It is still early in the season but, if Isak can continue his current form for the duration, then no one will be questioning his price tag.
