Liverpool close to confirming first major summer deal
It promises to be a summer of immense change at Liverpool.
Arne Slot’s side finished fifth in the Premier League and didn’t fare too well in the cup competitions either. All that despite spending £450m in last summer’s transfer window.
Recruitment will once again take centre stage - with Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes planning to shake up the Reds’ attacking options.
The likes of Yan Diomande and Jarrod Bowen have been linked with a move to Anfield - with Mohamed Salah leaving and Federico Chiesa likely to join him on the exit ramp.
Salah, 33, bid farewell to Liverpool on Sunday following the 1-1 Premier League draw against Brentford at Anfield. And alongside him in the post-match ceremony was Andy Robertson.
Liverpool say goodbye to Andy Robertson
Like Salah the Scotland international will be leaving the club upon the expiry of his contract. Liverpool declined to option to renew the 32-year-old’s deal - having earlier listened to offers for the left-back in the winter window.
Robbo come June will be free to pick his next club on a free transfer and events on Sunday have all but confirmed his destination.
Having come close to joining Tottenham for £5m in January it now looks as though the former Hull City defender will be off to North London on a free.
That’s according to Paul Joyce in the Times - who claims that the deal is set to go ahead now that Spurs have avoided relegation to the Championship.
Paul Joyce says Robertson will join Spurs
“[Robertson] is expected to join Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer now their Premier League status is safe.”
Spurs have endured a nightmare season - culminating in a final day escape from dropping into the Championship.
New manager Roberto De Zerbi did enough to get the Lilywhites over the line and now the Italian must plot improvements for the 2026/27 campaign.
No doubt having Robertson on board will be a huge boost for Spurs - with the long-serving Liverpool legend possessing leadership qualities and top-flight experience in abundance.
At £160k per week it was always a long shot that Robbo would have his contract renewed - especially since these days he’s a reserve behind Milos Kerkez.
Richard Hughes wouldn’t justify those wages for a back-up player - with it now expected that Kostas Tsimikas will return to Anfield to play the role of Kerkez’s understudy for next season.
