Fabrizio Romano confirms Liverpool are days away from £72m forward deal
Liverpool’s stated aim for this current transfer window has always bee adding one-v-one quality out wide.
Mohamed Salah leaving the club on a free transfer left a gaping hole in the attack and one which has yet to be filled.
Richard Hughes has managed to sign Victor Munoz from Osasuna - triggering the Spain FIFA World Cup winner’s £34m clause - but more work is needed.
Liverpool chasing Barcola and Minteh
Deals are currently active for at least TWO more wide forwards. Bradley Barcola has been the No1 choice ever since the Reds were swerved by Yan Diomande.
But Paris Saint-Germain are asking for a high price - starting at £145m - before they will consider letting the 23-year-old leave.
This week the 2024/25 Premier League champions also launched their opening sorties for Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh.
The 22-year-old Gambian was the subject of two bids - worth £50m and £60m - but it looks like the Seagulls will not sell the left-footer until £70m is put on the table.
Liverpool by that stage will probably require outgoings to finance their winger deals.
Cody Gakpo lined up for £72m Spurs deal
And one name continually mentioned in relation to a move to Tottenham has been Cody Gakpo. The £250k per week forward could be sacrificed in order to generate transfer income with a fee of £72m being suggested.
Gakpo, 27, is a long-term target for Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi - who is close to a total overhaul of his frontline.
Manchester City pair Savinho and Omar Marmoush will be lining up for Spurs this season - with Gakpo the final piece of the jigsaw for the Italian tactico.
Fabrizio Romano has now claimed that a deal for Gakpo to join the Lilywhites could now be only days away.
Gakpo to Spurs could be days away claims Fabrizio Romano
“Don’t forget Cody Gakpo, because Savinho is going to Tottenham in London for medical tests and contract signing,” he tells his YouTube audience.
“Omar Marmoush is expected to go to Tottenham as a centre striker, and he’s a target that is probably going to happen in the next days, as I told you.
“But I told you always: right winger, left winger, centre striker. This was what I told you about Tottenham. And for the left winger, the name remains Cody Gakpo.
“Tottenham are working on it. Tottenham are working on the player side. Player terms are not an issue. And then Tottenham remain absolutely on it on the club side with Liverpool.
“So, Gakpo to Tottenham could be over in the next days if the total deal can be agreed.”
Gakpo signed for Liverpool from PSV back in January 2023 - excelling during the 204/25 Premier League title-winning campaign. Last season did not go well for the Netherlands international - with fans calling for the versatile forward to be replaced.
His place in the the team is likely to go to Barcola if that deal can be brought to a successful conclusion with Iraola has also got Rio Ngumoha and Munoz at his disposal for the left side of the attack.
