Liverpool chances of signing a successor for 'sensational' star revealed

Liverpool still have a lot of work to do on their team before the transfer window slams shut.

Most of the Reds' fanbase expected their club to have changed dramatically by now.

However, that has been far from the case with only two new players being brought in thus far.

Indeed, a lot of Richard Hughes' time has been spent on trying to sign Yan Diomande and Bradley Barcola but, it still feels like some more moves should have been made by the Reds.

In fact, the main thing that fans are asking for is new players to be brought in due to how much their title rivals have improved their own ranks.

Of course, there is still around a month left of the summer transfer window so moves could still be made before it closes.

But, all the recent news that has emerged from Anfield certainly doesn't feel like it's going that way.

Although most of Liverpool's team could do with a new player or two being added to it, there's an awful feeling that is emerging among the Reds' fanbase that they could already be done with the transfer window.

Of course, talk about Barcola's Liverpool move is still rife but, since minimal updates have been shared about the Reds' pursuit recently, it's unclear whether that deal will even work out.

And, if it does, it'll probably cost the Anfield outfit most of their remaining transfer budget which is a risk that they may not want to take.

Although the Anfield outfit's attack is one of their main areas of concern, their defence is broken.

They may have four centre-back options and two left-backs but, with Conor Bradley out injured and three of their four centre-backs also side-lined, Liverpool are in a defensive crisis again.

So, with this in mind, you'd expect Liverpool to make a move for a new defender and bolster their ranks.

But, according to an update from Sky Sports journalist Mark McAdam, that is not the case.

"Well, no is the answer we are being told [whether Liverpool will sign a new defender]. My understanding is that Liverpool will not go into the market to sign a player [to cover their defence] for the next 4-6 weeks," he said live on Sky Sports.

"They’re just gonna have to ride through the storm and then wait for their players to come back and then they will be at full strength at the back."

Anyone with a pair of eyes can see that Liverpool need at least one or two new defenders to be brought in this summer.

Most outlets keep using Joe Gomez as one of the Reds' defensive options and, even though he is a 'sensational' player when fit, he spends more time on the side-lines than he does on the pitch.

The 2026-27 season was supposed to be his time to shine with Ibrahima Konate now out of the picture.

However, as has been the case any other time he's been given a chance, he's ended up injured and ruled out of action for who knows how long.

Gomez is now 29 years old and, by the end of the current season, he'll be 30.

One of the main things keeping the Englishman around at the moment is his homegrown status as that is one thing that the Reds are struggling with at the moment.

If Iraola wants to get Liverpool back to the top of the Premier League table and challenging for silverware again, he must convince Hughes to find him a versatile defender to bring in.

Otherwise, Liverpool will be left behind by their title rivals and they'll probably end up even worse off than they were during the 2025-26 campaign.
