Liverpool have easily been one of the Premier League's busiest teams in the transfer market over the last couple of years.

The Reds have spent well over £600 million on new players but, there are still so many areas among their ranks that need upgrading.

For example, before the 2026-27 season kicked off, Liverpool didn't know that they'd be needing a new left-back but, after the recent performances that Kostas Tsimikas and Milos Kerkez have been putting in, it's now more than clear that they do.

And, with so many of their contracts expiring in June 2027, another massive overhaul of their ranks is likely to be just around the corner.

In fact, a record breaking deal could be about to make its way onto Julian Ward's desk.

Liverpool are interested in signing Zion Suzuki from Aston Villa

Over the summer, talk of Liverpool signing a new goalkeeper was rife.

Alisson was heavily linked with a move to Juventus with some media outlets even sharing that an agreement had been reached between the Brazilian and the Serie A outfit.

Luckily, Liverpool came to their senses and chose to extend the veteran's contract by another year but, now that the January transfer window is just around the corner, the Anfield outfit are facing the same predicament.

Although they've tried to sign players to replace Alisson such as Lucca Brughmans and Giorgi Mamardashvili, neither of them can meet the standards that the Brazilian is setting.

But, with him getting older and the expiry of his deal edging closer, more rumours about potential goalkeeper signings are beginning to emerge.

TEAMtalk have now even shared an update about one of Liverpool's former targets who they're interested in signing once again.

"Liverpool are another major club to have checked on Suzuki as they assess their options between the posts amid uncertainty surrounding the future of long-time No.1 Alisson Becker," they wrote.

"We understand that the Brazilian’s long-term future is a subject of discussion at Anfield, with Liverpool considering what their next move should be as they plan for the future of their goalkeeping department.

"The Reds already have young Belgian goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans coming arriving in 2027, while Giorgi Mamardashvili is also on their books.

"However, Mamardashvili is not currently viewed as the long-term replacement for Alisson, and Liverpool are continuing to assess alternative options in the market.

"Sources have told us that Villa believe Suzuki is arguably the most exciting goalkeeping talent in world football and are delighted with the impact he has made since arriving at the club.

"That confidence is reflected in the club’s stance, with Emery’s side under no pressure to entertain approaches for a player they see as central to their long-term plans.

"However, we understand that Suzuki could eventually become the most expensive goalkeeper in football history should the growing interest in his services translate into a concrete transfer battle."

Zion Suzuki should have been signed by Liverpool in the summer

Before Aston Villa even threw their hat into the ring for Zion Suzuki, Liverpool were linked with an interest in him.

The goalkeeper was the subject of interest from Liverpool as they were trying to figure out the best course of action with Alisson.

In the end, they stuck with the Brazilian but, since Villa only shelled out around £30 million for the Japan international, it feels like he would have been a steal.

That is, especially when the Reds chose to splash around €30 million (£25 million) on Brughmans anyway.

If they had got a deal for Suzuki over the line in the summer like they initially wanted to, he could have spent a year getting used to all of Liverpool's processes and being mentored by Alisson.

But now, if the Reds eventually do decide that they want him, they're going to have to spend an obscene amount of money to even get him through the doors.

Here's hoping that one of their current goalkeepers steps up to the play or, they find an alternative option.
