Fabrizio Romano confirms our report: Liverpool have made contact for Premier League star
Liverpool have made contact over one of the most in-demand Premier League players. Fabrizio Romano confirms our report.
Liverpool are in the market for a new midfielder. Maybe even more than one, depending on potential outgoings this summer.
Curtis Jones could depart, while Alexis Mac Allister has been linked with a move away, too. All of this on top of the fact that Liverpool desperately need a new midfielder even if they were to both stay.
A defence-first player in the middle feels like a must. This squad only really has Wataru Endo for that job but who knows how long he’s sticking around for?
Liverpool do seem to agree, though. Anfield Watch reported earlier this month that the Reds had inquired about West Ham United’s Matheus Fernandes - a fantastic defensive midfielder and someone we first recommended over a year ago.
That’s now been confirmed by Fabrizio Romano on his YouTube channel, who says the call happened at the end of May.
As we understand it, Liverpool were put off by the asking price. Interest from Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur has driven it sky high, approaching £85m.
That’s more than the Reds were willing to commit on Fernandes, a player who has now suffered back-to-back Premier League relegations. What was supposed to be a value-for-money signing is instead an incredibly expensive one.
Liverpool’s priority remains signing a new winger, with Yan Diomande the top target. Until that’s sorted, we can’t imagine the club commit to spending a large amount on a midfielder.
Fernandes, then, will likely head elsewhere as the race for him continues. We’ll just hope that Liverpool can find the right alternative this summer - because they certainly need this type of player.
