Ally McCoist slams 'slack' Liverpool ace after what he did vs Barnsley
Liverpool beat Barnsley 4-1 in their FA Cup clash on Monday evening.
Arne Slot's men extended their unbeaten run to 11 games across all competitions with the Reds set to face Brighton in the fourth round.
Going into the tie, most people expected the Anfield outfit to win even before it was announced that they'd be playing an almost full-strength side against their League One opponents.
And, while some of the Reds' players put in decent performances, there was one player who left Ally McCoist rather unimpressed.
Ally McCoist tears into Joe Gomez for 'slack' moment against Barnsley
Joe Gomez is a player who hasn't been called upon all that much by Slot this season.
However, with Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley both likely to be out until the end of the campaign, it's clear that the Englishman is going to be appearing a tad more often.
But, despite being trusted to start against the South Yorkshire outfit, Gomez's performance came in below expectations with McCoist even claiming that his start to the game was "slack."
“[That was] slack from Joe Gomez Darren, really slack,” McCoist said while live on TNT Sports.
“He gives up possession of the ball and Cleary was through.
“Not the best of starts from Gomez at the moment.”
Joe Gomez needs to up his game for Liverpool as soon as possible
As mentioned, Liverpool's defensive problems have sort of taken over their season.
Even if every single member of Slot's first-team squad was fit, the Reds still wouldn't have enough cover for a 50 + game season.
However, with the lack of competition at Anfield, it's not hard to see why Gomez isn't fulfilling expectations.
He knows that, due to the lack of depth Liverpool have, he's likely to get chosen but, realistically you'd have wanted the Englishman to take this opportunity with both hands.
The 2026 World Cup is just around the corner and if he performs well, he could end up earning a surprise call-up from Thomas Tuchel.
However, if he carries on putting in performances of this level for the rest of the campaign, Slot may end up choosing someone such as Calvin Ramsay over him in the future.
