Adam Wharton says Liverpool had an even better passer than Xavi

Adam Wharton has long been linked with a Liverpool switch.

The Englishman is one of the Premier League's most sought-after midfielders with clubs from across the world vying for his transfer.

At the moment, the Reds have Ryan Gravenberch as their number six but, with the performances that he's put in this term, it's not hard to understand why fans want a new defensive midfielder to challenge the Dutchman.

However, with the summer transfer window not even open yet, these discussions will take time to come to fruition but, it does feel like Wharton could be hinting about joining Liverpool in the future, even if talks haven't took place yet.

That is, especially after what he said about one of Liverpool's former players.

Adam Wharton says he'd put Steven Gerrard's passing into his perfect player

Over the years, Liverpool have been one of the most feared teams in the world.

The Anfield outfit may not have won all that much before Jurgen Klopp took over but, that doesn't mean that their players weren't top notch.

Players such as Jamie Carragher, Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Steven Gerrard all made a name for themselves while playing for Liverpool with the last of the four even being seen as one of England's best-ever midfielder.

And, when Wharton was asked about who's passing he'd use to create his perfect player, he instantly replied with Gerrard's name, choosing him over the likes of Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

"Build your perfect player with the following categories," Wharton was asked.

"Pace, [Kylian Mbappe], Finishing [Lionel] Messi, Football IQ, [Sergio] Busquets, and passing, [Steven] Gerrard]."

Gerrard is one of Liverpool's best-ever players.

The Englishman stuck with his boyhood club through thick and thin, only choosing to leave when Brendan Rogers made it clear that he was no longer in his plans.

Clubs such as Real Madrid were constantly vying for his transfer and, even though he could've won more trophies if he chose to pack his bags and leave, he chose to stay put and become known as one of the Reds' best-ever players.

At the moment, Liverpool are in a bit of a rut with their midfield in dire need of a shake-up with Alexis Mac Allister and Gravenberch failing to meet the playing standards required.

If the Reds had a player of Gerrard's quality among their ranks, that would've never been the case.

Of course, more money could be spent on bringing players such as Wharton through the doors but, with how their £450 million spend went last summer, it's unclear whether splashing the cash again will actually make things better or not.

Here's hoping Arne Slot can get his team back on track and ready to fight for titles once again, otherwise, it could be curtains for the Dutchman.
