Finally, Liverpool have secured their new Trent Alexander-Arnold
Liverpool have their new Trent Alexander-Arnold and he's destined to become a fan favourite.
It was a soul-crushing announcement video. Alexander-Arnold sitting down in front of the cameras. The sigh. The sad face. It was incredibly disappointing.
For over a year it felt like Alexander-Arnold has gaslit us. He celebrated hushing his haters, made so many apparent promises. All knowing that he had already made up his mind.
The scouser who could have been this generation's Steven Gerrard, instead ended up being another Michael Owen.
Alexander-Arnold ruined his reputation, lost his relationship with the fans and his legacy at Anfield with his decision to depart. He could have become a legend, instead he chose a more difficult path, which has so far proved unsuccessful.
Liverpool's pressing homegrown concerns
At the same time, Alexander-Arnold ended up being an example for a lot of the club's academy players. In the year and a bit since he left the club so many others have followed suit.
Tyler Morton departed for pastures new. Jarell Quansah also left the club. As did Curtis Jones.
Like Trent, these are players who were at Liverpool's academy from when they were a very young age. They went through the ranks established themselves as first-team players and then left.
Now, without them there was a concern that Liverpool don't really have a scouser or a true academy player in their first-team over the course of the summer.
The discussion has continued but Liverpool might just be in the process of securing their new Alexander-Arnold.
Liverpool have secured their new Alexander-Arnold
Well wait no more. All those concerns from the summer have been quashed by the emergence of Lewis Koumas. Formerly, one of Jurgen Klopp's Kids, who made his mark in the first-team at 18-years-old in the 2023/24 campaign before going on several loans, Koumas is now emerging as a genuine first-team player.
His goal and assist against LASK becoming only the second Liverpool player aged 21 or younger to score and assist in a single game was confirmation of that.
Koumas is growing in confidence. He is starting games and he is making an impact on the pitch. The more confidence he plays with the more important he becomes. His energy and work-rate is absolutely top notch.
But most importantly, he is one of Liverpool's very own. He plays with that attitude and he can relate to the fans. It's why he is the Reds' new Alexander-Arnold, and why he's here to stay.
