One star has sent a true statement to Liverpool after a bombshell revelation this week. The club will be forced to take note.

Liverpool overcame Atlético Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday evening. It was an incredible win in the end, with Andoni Iraola's side scoring two great goals to come from behind.

It means Liverpool have started their UEFA Champions League campaign with a win - much as they did last season against the same opponents. That's back-to-back wins in all competitions, too, and it does feel like Iraola is gradually getting the team into a better shape.

Part of that has been him shifting stars around. We've seen that on the wings, primarily, as Iraola tries to find the right mix without having a natural right-sided option.

Right-back, too, has seen some swapping around and Ronald Araujo seems to be the pick right now. But it's in midfield where things are particularly interesting.

Alexis Mac Allister didn't start the season there, with Iraola opting for Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai. Though, that will largely have been because Mac Allister's pre-season was cut short by Argentina making the World Cup final.

But it's also notable because Gravenberch and Szoboszlai were the two midfielders who got massive long-term contracts this year. Mac Allister didn't - as he's pointed out this week.

Alexis Mac Allister sends a statement

Mac Allister openly talked ahead of the Atletico game about wanting a new contact at Liverpool - and how the club told him it wouldn't happen. They're not in a position to offer him an extension, apparently.

It's a blow and certainly comes across as though Mac Allister is the sacrifice for a new midfield signing. But he's sent a statement to the club with his display on Wednesday.

Not only was Mac Allister solid all game but he bagged an emphatic winner. It was a magnificent hit, sent crashing into the net with his weaker foot from range.

Mac Allister had a weaker campaign last term, of course, but he's started this one brilliantly. You'd have to say he's the club's in-form midfielder and this goal is a message Liverpool will have to think on.

If he keeps performing like this, there's just no way the Reds can sell him. He's on course to become a vital player for Iraola and we're not sure he could be easily replaced - or replaced at all, quite honestly.

Mac Allister was, after all, in the PFA Team of the Year two years ago and looked like one of the absolute outstanding Premier League midfielders. If he returns to that level, and he's on course to do so, then Liverpool won't find a like-for-like.

This goal was a reminder of that. Keep it up and Liverpool will have to rethink this contract situation.
