Liverpool making massive mistake, must agree deal ASAP

Liverpool have got to agree a deal as soon as possible. Their current plan is a recipe for disaster.

Liverpool have some work to do, especially with renewing contracts at the club. The ‘big two’ in that regard are unquestionably Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker - two all-time greats still operating at the elite level but with expiring deals.

The pair remain on course to leave Liverpool at the end of the season. The Reds will need to figure out exactly how much money they want to give two veteran players and, of course, whether the players themselves actually want to stay.

Either way, the decisions will be seismic for this team. And they’re not even the end of it.

Rio Ngumoha needs a new contract as hype around him continues to grow. He’s contracted through 2028 and is in talks over renewing that - extending his time at the club for the foreseeable future.

And then there’s Alexis Mac Allister.

The Alexis Mac Allister mistake

Liverpool are making what looks like a pretty clear mistake with Alexis Mac Allister. The Argentine’s contract runs until 2028 and he made it public at the start of the season that he wasn’t in talks over a new one.

That’s despite the player wanting a new deal. Liverpool “weren’t in a position” to give him one, however, and that came after finding that position for both Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai - two players signed at the same time as Mac Allister and who play the same role.

Mac Allister’s form has now shone a new light on the situation. He’s in the running to be Liverpool’s best player let alone best midfielder, such has been his start to the campaign.

Despite that, the Telegraph reports that Liverpool are in ‘no rush’ to give the Argentine a new deal. This is a mistake.

Mac Allister is busy recapturing his 2024/25 title-winning form - something neither Gravenberch or Szoboszlai are managing. The longer that goes on, the more it’s going to convince rivals that he’s a player they’d quite like.

That becomes an enormous problem closer to his contract expiry. It both makes it harder to convince Mac Allister to stay and drives up his demands in talks. The kind of double-whammy that Liverpool can entirely avoid if they just negotiate a new deal now.

This is the moment to give him that contract. And the Reds are wasting it.
