New deal confirmed for 'very talented' Liverpool midfielder
Liverpool have a lot of things to figure out this summer.
The start of the 2026-27 Premier League season is slowly edging closer and, since Liverpool have only signed one player so far, it's clear that plenty more change is on the way.
Andoni Iraola is treating every player as if they're a new signing so, once they all report back for the start of pre-season, the Reds' fans are probably going to start seeing some movement.
This is good news as, without at least another three or four players being brought in, Liverpool would be getting even further away from their title rivals as they're all already bolstering their ranks.
Of course, moves take time to confirm and get over the line and, luckily for the Reds, one deal has just been confirmed.
Ollie O'Connor has signed a new contract with Liverpool
Liverpool's midfield was one of their worst-performing areas last season.
The Anfield outfit struggled to bring the ball from their defence to their attack with only Dominik Szoboszlai really proving his worth.
This had led to fans demanding that change is made and asking for certain players to be moved on.
However, within their academy ranks, the Reds' midfield is fairly stacked with Trey Nyoni the pick of the bunch.
Every Liverpool player that comes through the academy will want to be the next Steven Gerrard and, even though the futures of some players was unclear, as per a fresh update from journalist Lewis Bower, 17-year-old Ollie O'Connor has extended his contract.
"Finally, Ollie O’Connor, another who signs a new contract with Liverpool that was offered after his latest was due to expire," he wrote via his personal X account.
"O’Connor recently signed to Roc Nation and in my opinion is a very talented midfielder who has sacrificed himself for the team in recent years."
Liverpool need to figure out what they want their midfield to look like next season
Since Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch performed rather poorly last term, it's hardly surprising to see fans ask for new players to be brought in.
Indeed, if Liverpool just kept hold of Jones then they'd already have a like-for-like replacement for the Argentinian but, since it looks like he's still on Inter Milan's radar, the Englishman could be exiting Anfield soon.
Others such as Khepren Thuram, Adam Wharton and Ayoubb Bouaddi have all been linked but, one thing that some fans haven't thought about is looking towards their academy.
Of course, now that Iraola is in charge, youngsters have a much better chance of featuring for Liverpool with Nyoni likely looking for a regular role in Liverpool's XI.
However, others such as O'Connor and maybe even Stefan Bajcetic could also be looked towards as new players that the Reds could use.
O'Connor played 27 games in almost every position on the pitch across all competitions for the Reds' under-18s last season and even scored four goals during that time.
He may still be young but, in Carabao Cup games or even just for five-minute cameos here and there, he could be of use to Iraola and allow the Reds to save some money and spend it on other areas of their squad instead.
