Liverpool have been linked with a plethora of players already this summer.

Much like Tottenham, the Anfield outfit are in need of a rebuild to try and get themselves back on track.

Luckily, they did manage to qualify for the Champions League during the 2026-27 season which means that they should, theoretically, be able to sign any players that they want.

Of course, as has always been the case with Liverpool, money is the main stumbling block getting in the way of them completing deals.

So, the fact that a new asking price has now been revealed for one of their long-term targets is a tad worrying.

Wolves want £51 million to allow Joao Gomes to leave

Joao Gomes felt nailed on to join Atletico Madrid this summer.

For the longest time now, journalists have reported that the Brazilian was well on his way to the Metropolitano but, after Bernardo Silva joined Real Madrid rather than Atletico, Diego Simeone pulled out of their deal for Gomes.

The Spanish side had agreed a €40 million fee (£34 million) for the midfielder but, now that deal is off, it seems like Wolves have changed the amount they want for their midfielder, especially now that Liverpool have re-entered the race.

"Manchester United have abandoned their €40M move for Éderson and shifted focus to João Gomes," Ekrem Konur wrote via his personal X account.

"Liverpool are also interested, while his Atlético Madrid move has stalled.

"Wolves value Gomes at around €60M, with both Premier League clubs monitoring the situation closely."

Joao Gomes would be an interesting signing for Liverpool

Since the midfield market is so inflated at the moment, Liverpool are going to have to start thinking outside of the box if they're wanting to get a good deal.

Granted, Gomes isn't that far outside of the box but, it's unclear whether he just stood out for Wolves because his teammates were poor or if he was actually good.

As per Fotmob, Gomes only won 50.4 per cent of his ground duels and just 50 per cent of his aerial duels in the Premier League last term.

He did manage to maintain a pass accuracy of 85.6 per cent but he also only created two big chances across the entire season.

Defensively, he was fairly strong as he made 388 defensive contributions.

Gomes also made 45 clearances, made 107 tackles and recovered the ball 194 times.

So, with Liverpool needing a new defensive midfielder due to Ryan Gravenberch's poor form, Gomes could be an ideal acquisition for them.

But, since he's not an all-rounder and isn't all that versatile, the £51 million Wolves now want for him could end up being a step too far.

That is, especially with Ayyoub Bouaddi still firmly in their sights.
