The chances of Liverpool signing a Premier League star just took a giant step forward. Watch this space.

Liverpool need a winger. Desperately, actually, as Mohamed Salah's exit leaves them unbelievably short on production out wide and they were already lacking to begin with.

The top target was known, too: Yan Diomande. He was the dream signing and Liverpool were uncharacteristically public with that.

However, the Ivorian has chosen Paris Saint-Germain as his next club, leaving the Reds scrambling for another option. Not that the option is actually obvious from here.

There is an enormous gap between the unattainable top-level wingers on the right flank and the rest. Diomande was something of a bridge between the two as a relatively unproven young player who was already delivering great output in a major league.

There is no similar alternative. On the left? Said El Mala, Bazoumana Touré, Alberto Moleiro, Kenan Yildiz...

Plenty of options in that age bracket who are already showing great output. Liverpool, then, need to take a risk.

They can either head for a stop gap like Jarrod Bowen or Harry Wilson, someone who isn't the long-term answer but can do a job for a year at a relatively good price, or they can sign a very young player. Someone capable of developing into a superstar with a bit of luck.

And in that regard, one of the better choices is Yankuba Minteh. The Gambian is a Premier League player already and at just 21, boasts considerable experience.

The Athletic claims he's one of the alternatives Liverpool are looking at and honestly, he feels like the most realistic. Minteh isn't yet a certain starter for Brighton and that makes him more available than most.

But he likely has the biggest potential of anyone Liverpool could sign this summer for the right. That makes this one immeasurably more possible after Diomande's rejection as Minteh simply looks like the strongest option out there.

And so it'll depend on how quickly Liverpool want to solve this problem. They could wait six months or a year and see if better options emerge.

Or it could be Minteh. And the more we think about it, the more likely that one seems.
