Liverpool's €70m approach for Real Madrid star would be a MISTAKE

Liverpool are reportedly in talks with Real Madrid to sign a new talent. They're making a mistake.

Those who shine under the bright lights of the Bernabeu are usually the cream of the crop and the opportunity to add one of their generational talents to your ranks is not something you can pass up.

However, the reports never seem to tell the whole story and when you look at Liverpool's current context, it would be a massive error of judgement to spend money on players the team doesn't need.

FSG are more than willing to support the different ideas the Liverpool recruitment team have, but the supply of transfer funds is not endless and the club's spending habits need to be far more focused.

€70m on Camavinga is a mistake

According to Fichajes, a £61m bid has been put in by the Reds for midfielder Eduardo Camavinga.

The Real Madrid star is still only 23 years old and a move for such a reasonable fee might initially sound like a no-brainer. After all, the report mentions that he's versatile, physical, tactically intelligent and has a maturity to his game despite his youthful career. There's so much to like about him.

He's also incredibly experienced - now into the seventh professional season of his career - and his tenacity is extraordinary. Liverpool would have one of the world's elite talents if they signed him.

But in rejecting the Reds' approach, it feels as though Real Madrid have done the club a huge favour.

It's understandable why Xabi Alonso wouldn't want to let the Frenchman go, and given how highly-rated he is, it doesn't make sense for £62m to be the price tag set for him. £100m feels more likely.

The main reason why Liverpool shouldn't consider making another move for him and upping their bid is primarily because of the sheer amount of work that needs to be done in other areas of the pitch.

At least one centre-back, if not two, need to be signed, before you consider replacing Virgil Van Dijk in a years time when his contract is on the brink of expiring. And if you look at the forwards, it's clear that a winger is required to finally replace Luis Diaz, and Mohamed Salah won't be around forever.

That's not to say that the midfield shouldn't get any attention at all, because it might well need to be replenished with a couple of different options, but spending over £60m on someone who wouldn't necessarily be a guaranteed starter would be a wasteful use of resources and since the Reds spent £450m last summer, you feel as though FSG won't have as large a budget next time around.

Camavinga would be a great addition to Arne Slot's squad, but other positions need to be prioritised.
