Liverpool are among the teams chasing a free transfer deal for LaLiga star Oscar Mingueza.

That’s according to a report in AS, which claims the Celta Vigo man is under consideration at Anfield.

Mingueza, 26, is a versatile defender - capable of playing either right or left wing-back in a 3-4-3 or else as an orthodox full-back for Claudio Giraldez’s side.

He could therefore provide many solutions for Arne Slot - who has been struggling for fit right-backs in particular thus far this season.

Mingueza is a versatile Spanish star

Conor Bradley, Jeremie Frimpong, Joe Gomez and Dominik Szoboszlai have all been tried in the right-back position following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure for Real Madrid.

But there remains an opportunity for another performer to definitively clinch the position as injuries and a lack of form have led to inconsistency there for Slot.

Mingueza would be a smart pick-up in that regard - with his Celta contract expiring in summer 2026.

He joined the Galicians back in 2022 from Barca on a cut-price €3m deal and has gone on to establish himself in the Spanish top flight as well as in the national team.

Celta still want to renew Mingueza's contract

Mingueza has even played at centre-back in his career - appearing in the middle of defence for Barca before moving on. For their part Celta are still keen to renew their defender’s contract but are now aware of interest from the Reds.

“Renewing Óscar Mingueza's contract is one of the issues RC Celta needs to resolve quickly,” a report in Estadio Deportivo reads - referencing the AS story.

“The Catalan's contract expires at the end of this season, meaning he will be free to sign with any team he wishes and whose style suits him, starting January 1st.

“Thanks to his versatility and strong performances, Mingueza is attracting the attention of many clubs, with Liverpool of the English Premier League being the latest to show interest.”

Mingueza looks like he could become a very useful squad player for the Reds - filling in a number of different defensive roles as required.

And the fact he comes for free is another attractive quality. Let’s wait and see how this deal develops - with Liverpool entitled to open talks with Mingueza next week.
