Shock Arsenal deal for Liverpool midfielder 'one to watch' says trusted club insider
Liverpool are considering big midfield changes this summer.
Names like Aurelien Tchouameni and Alex Scott have been linked with inbound moves to Anfield. The outgoing Premier League champions struggled in the middle third last season - getting diminishing returns from Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch.
Andoni Iraola may deem alterations necessary - and any transfer business is going to have an impact for those midfielders already on the books.
One such casualty could be Curtis Jones.
Curtis Jones linked with LFC exit
The 25-year-old is out of contract in 2027 and sporting director Richard Hughes is running out of time to cash in on the homegrown playmaker.
The six-cap England international looked set for a move to Inter Milan - but it appears the Italian champions are unable or at least unwilling to finance the deal.
Liverpool want £30m to £35m for Jones despite his short contract duration - with Inter so far reluctant to stump up the cash.
Any delay could open the door for an alternative suitor to enter the bidding - with Lewis Steele now warning that Arsenal could be a team to watch in this transfer race.
Arsenal and Spurs want Jones
Following on from Tottenham’s unsuccessful pursuit of Jones in January - which saw them go for Conor Gallagher instead - it could prove to be a North London showdown for Jones.
“I think Liverpool doesn’t want to sell him for anything less than their valuation, which is fair enough,” he told Anfield Index.
“And it seems that other clubs aren’t willing to put up the money that Liverpool wants at this stage. “As far as Liverpool is concerned, that would mean the door is closed on Curtis leaving this summer.
“The only thing I wonder is that we haven’t really heard from Curtis himself.
“He seemed to be aiming for a move away this summer. “So, if a club comes in and puts the money on the table, that could certainly change things.
“We know that Spurs have liked him in the past, though they went for Gallagher in January instead. “I think there was always talk that Arsenal might have liked him.
“So, that could be one to watch.
“I do think it’s more likely that he will stay at this point based on what’s been said, but I don’t think the door is completely shut because he only has a year left on his contract.”
Curtis Jones needs a fresh start
Jones played plenty last season under Arne Slot - but rarely as a starter in the Dutchman’s midfield. It’s understandable why he would consider a move away - given that Jones was only in the team as a stop-gap right-back towards the end of the campaign.
Inter are probably best placed to give him what he’s looking for but if the Serie A side fumble the deal then the Premier League champions or else Spurs could pick up the pieces.
