Breakthrough imminent in deal for Liverpool midfielder as record agreement confirmed
Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones has been the subject of intense transfer interest from Inter Milan.
The 25-year-old was first approached about a deal back in January but ultimately no agreement could be reached between the two clubs.
But now that summer has arrived the Italian champions are back. With Jones out of contract in 2027 the Nerazzurri believe they can land their ideal midfield target for a rock-bottom fee.
So far Cristian Chivu’s side have been unwilling to lift their bid beyond around £20m - a far cry from the reported £35m that Liverpool are said to be demanding.
Elliot Anderson to Man City unblocks Jones deal
A breakthrough however now looks imminent as a result of potentially record-breaking transfer business elsewhere.
Manchester City have agreed a fee with Nottingham Forest to sign England midfielder Elliot Anderson. The 23-year-old will move to the Etihad for a fee reported to be a flat £116m in some places but as high as £130m in others.
That latter sum would eclipse the £125m Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak last summer - making Anderson the most expensive player in British football history.
And losing their midfield powerhouse would mean the Tricky Trees going into the market for replacements with Lucas Bergvall and Davide Frattesi both on their radar according to a report on BBC Sport.
Nottingham Forest will sign Inter's Frattesi
“Forest are interested in Tottenham's Lucas Bergvall, along with Davide Frattesi of Inter Milan, and are now expected to sign two midfielders this summer,” the report reads.
The signing of Italy international Frattesi from Inter would have a big impact on their pursuit of Jones. It would free up plenty of transfer funds in order to raise their bid for the England man - with Frattesi valued at around £30m.
So we can expect movement soon for Jones - who is reported to have already agreed terms on a five-year deal at San Siro.
Crucial domino falls in Inter deal for Jones
As the lone Scouser in the Liverpool squad fans will no doubt lament the loss of Jones - a homegrown talent who has won two Premier League titles in red.
But he has been unable to decisively win a place in the midfield with former coaching incumbent Arne Slot using him at right-back towards the end of the season.
It remains to be seen whether or not the No17 will still be at the club by the time preseason rolls around under Andoni Iraola.
But right now all roads lead to a Merseyside exit for Jones - with the Anderson deal as well as the imminent departure of Frattesi significantly unblocking Inter’s pursuit.
