Liverpool talks are ON for international defender
Liverpool are in talks over a deal involving an international defender. But it's not the deal people want.
Liverpool's centre-back situation is a mess right now. The Reds are down to three senior options after Giovanni Leoni's knee injury, one that keeps him out for the season.
But that's not all. Ibrahima Konate's contract expires at the end of the season and Liverpool are yet to agree terms on a new one.

In fact, it looks increasingly likely that Konate won't sign a new contract and will instead leave the Reds on a free transfer. That's certainly what Real Madrid hope happens.
Liverpool did try to get ahead of the situation by signing Marc Guehi but that deal collapsed at the last minute. Now they face a struggle to sign the Crystal Palace captain with increased competition at the end of his contract.
Then there's the Joe Gomez situation. One that's becoming increasingly complicated on its own.
Joe Gomez and AC Milan
MilanLive.it claims AC Milan and Liverpool are still in contact over a deal for Joe Gomez. This is supported by other reports in Italy that make it clear he's very much a target.
Gomez nearly joined Milan last month but Liverpool's failure to sign Guehi ended any deal. The hope in Italy is that the Reds are open to selling in January - hence keeping the talks alive.
But how things look after the Leoni injury is unclear. Liverpool may not want to move anyone else on as they're light in the role.
At the same time, the Reds may fancy shifting everything around ahead of Konate's potential exit and sign multiple defenders. No one knows what the plan is just yet.
And until it's a bit clearer, Gomez to Milan will have to remain on hold. The Leoni injury changed things, as did the failure to sign Guehi.
Time for a new plan.
