Liverpool are reportedly on the brink of an announcement on Andoni Iraola.

Liverpool aren’t really wasting any time as they seek their Arne Slot successor. Anfield Watch understands that Andoni Iraola has always been the pick to replace the Dutchman - and now things are on the brink of confirmation.

The Times reports that talks with Iraola have advanced quickly and Liverpool are closing in on his appointment. It’s expected that he’ll bring Bournemouth assistant Tommy Elphick with him, a lifelong Red.

Liverpool are eager to get things wrapped up pre-World Cup. It certainly seems they’ll be able to do that, presumably because of an established relationship between Iraola and sporting director Richard Hughes.

Hughes brought Iraola to Bournemouth when he was the sporting director there, and will now confirm a deal with him for a second time. It’s a lot of faith to put in the Spaniard, certainly.

Getting this done before the World Cup is a massive boost, too. Liverpool will also hope to strike one or two transfers before the tournament and having a head coach in place helps massively there.

Andoni Iraola: Situation Summary

Bournemouth Campaign and Stats

As of 31 May 2026, Andoni Iraola has concluded a historic tenure with AFC Bournemouth. The 43-year-old Spanish manager enjoyed a sensational final campaign, guiding the Cherries to a club-best sixth-place finish in the Premier League. Following a spectacular 18-match unbeaten streak during the season, Iraola successfully secured European qualification for the first time in Bournemouth's history, sealing a spot in the upcoming UEFA Europa League. Having already announced in April that he would depart at the end of his contract, he leaves the Vitality Stadium having firmly established legendary status.

High-Profile Anfield Negotiations

Now a free agent, the Basque tactician has immediately become the premier target for elite clubs ahead of the summer. Following the sudden sacking of Arne Slot, Liverpool have identified Iraola as their absolute priority to take over the vacancy at Anfield. Sky sources indicate that advanced and ongoing negotiations are taking place, with the club's hierarchy eager to finalise his appointment before the World Cup begins on 11 June. While Crystal Palace, AC Milan, and Bayer Leverkusen have all registered concrete interest, Iraola reportedly looks destined for Merseyside.
