Liverpool lining up sensational transfer to replace Joe Gomez
Liverpool are making moves to replace a club legend.
Joe Gomez has long been a strong pillar at Anfield. Not only for his versatility and composure on the ball, but also his ability to just step in and perform in high-pressure moments whenever he is needed.
However, Gomez’s career at Anfield has also been mired by injuries. Recurrent setbacks have disrupted his rhythm and limited his ability to be a truly valuable member of the squad in recent times.
With his contract running down in 2027, the coming summer may represent the ideal moment for both player and club to part ways amicably.
A move now would allow Liverpool to secure a transfer fee rather than risk losing him for free later, while giving Gomez the opportunity to reset his career, regain fitness, and enjoy a fresh challenge elsewhere.
While it will inevitably be difficult to say goodbye to a player of his stature, a summer exit could ultimately be the most sensible decision for all parties. Gomez’s legacy at Liverpool is secure, and his next chapter could flourish away from Anfield.
And if Gomez leaves, he'll also have to be replaced. Liverpool may already be working on an ideal option for that, too.
The name on the club's radar is Nnamdi Collins. The German international is a target for Liverpool this summer according to Sky Sports.
The report claims Collins has taken control of his own future by changing his agency recently and that he wants to move this summer.
Collins has previously admitted he would want to join Liverpool if the opportunity arose and that he wants to play in the Premier League, so he'd definitely be open to a move.
And what makes him the ideal replacement for Gomez?
Well, he's 22-years-old, ready to hit the prime of his career. He is incredibly fast and he is very composed on the ball - the very traits that made Gomez such a valuable player for Liverpool over the years.
He is used to building out from the back and stepping forward with the ball when space opens up in Frankfurt's current system. At the same time he is rapid when it comes to making recovery runs.
But the other enticing factor about Collins is the fact that he can also play as a full-back as well as a centre-back.
That is very Gomez esque and it's why when you put the pieces together, this is a move that is starting to make a lot of sense.
Replacing Gomez this summer could be a really smart move and when you look at the market Collins just seems like the perfect fit because of how similar he is in profile to the Reds' England international.
It would be a sensational move yet again from Hughes, who has a great knack for finding the right players for the Reds.
