Liverpool line up shock move for £10m star after Andoni Iraola appointment
Liverpool are likely to have an entirely new-look team by the start of the 2026-27 season.
Although some of their 2025-26 summer signings didn't really get a chance to prove their worth this term, next time around, things are probably going to be much different.
Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate are three players who are already confirmed to be exiting Anfield at the end of June.
And, with the futures of Federico Chiesa, Alexis Mac Allister and many others also up in the air, a massive amount of change is evidently on the way.
The rumour mill has already started to turn and now, the Reds are being linked with yet another player to bolster their ranks.
Liverpool go toe-to-toe with Chelsea and Crystal Palace for Maxime Esteve
Maxime Esteve was one of the only bright sparks within Burnley's team this season.
The Clarets ended the 2025-26 season on 22 points after they only managed to win four Premier League games.
Despite this, Esteve was a fairly dominant force at the back and, thanks to these performances, several clubs, including Liverpool, are now vying for his transfer, according to a new report.
"Burnley are fully expecting to lose key defender Maxime Esteve this summer, with Liverpool among a three-strong Premier League contingent considering a move, and with the Clarets already having begun assessing potential replacements, TEAMtalk can exclusively reveal," they wrote.
"The Clarets have long accepted that keeping hold of Esteve would be a difficult task following his impressive rise since arriving from Montpellier in a €12m (£10.3m, $14m) deal in summer 2024 following a successful loan at Turf Moor.
"The towering 6ft 4in French defender has developed into one of Burnley‘s most important players and established himself as a standout performer in English football, attracting attention from several Premier League clubs in the process.
"TEAMtalk understands that Liverpool, Chelsea and Crystal Palace are among the clubs who have closely monitored Esteve’s progress and continue to hold strong admiration for the 23-year-old centre-back."
Liverpool's defence needs a massive overhaul this summer
Very few members of Liverpool's first-team squad performed to the standards expected of them this season.
Of course, there was the odd exception such as Hugo Ekitike and Dominik Szoboszlai but, in defence, there was rarely a time when Liverpool's back line had two or three good games in a row.
Indeed, the fact that Arne Slot was trying to use Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong as defensive full-backs needs to be taken into account but even Konate and Virgil van Dijk had more bad days than good.
Marc Guehi was one of Liverpool's main summer targets and, if they'd have managed to get a deal over the line, things would have probably been much different.
But, now that the season is over and the transfer window is edging closer, it would not be surprising to see several new defenders being brought in, especially when Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet are still so young.
Andoni Iraola has a lot of work to do at Anfield but, if he can sign the right players this summer, the Reds could get back to their best and start challenging for titles once again which is exactly what fans want after a season of underperformance.
