Liverpool choose 19-year-old midfielder to replace Curtis Jones
Liverpool have wrapped up an outgoing deal for Curtis Jones to join Inter Milan.
The 25-year-old homegrown midfielder is putting pen to paper on a five-year contract at San Siro. With only one year left on his Liverpool contract it was decided to move Jones on - rather than losing him on a free transfer next summer.
The Italian champions have assembled a package reaching £30m for the Liverpool playmaker - a decent fee for a player well into the last 12 months of his deal.
Andoni Iraola and Richard Hughes are likely to set aside the Jones fee to improve the squad elsewhere. A winger is required - with deals alive for both Bradley Barcola and Yankuba Minteh.
Liverpool have a gap in midfield
And Jones’ absence creates a void in midfield which could require attention from the transfer market. Adam Wharton is the latest name in the frame with the Crystal Palace star valued at around £78m.
According to a report in the Athletic however the replacement for Jones is already at Anfield with Trey Nyoni now set for a bigger role in the squad.
Trey Nyoni is the one to replace Jones
“They believe that 19-year-old academy midfielder Trey Nyoni is ready to play a much bigger role after being one of the standout performers in pre-season,” the report reads.
“Any talk of loaning the former Leicester City youngster out has been long since silenced by the speed of his development.”
Nyoni, 19, joined Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp - going on to make his debut under the German legend aged only 16 in 2024.
Last season he featured only intermittently for Arne Slot - leading to speculation that the England youth would be available for loan or transfer this summer.
Liverpool won't loan out Nyoni
Championship side Swansea thought they were close to landing Nyoni - with Aberdeen north of the border also keen on sealing a loan deal.
But Nyoni has taken his chance in preseason - impressing the Basque tactico in his outings thus far. Nyoni has been one of the best performers in the preseason games - standing out in matches against Sunderland, Leeds and Monaco in particular.
That could well be enough to earn Nyoni increased game time for the 2026/27 season. He inked a contract extension in 2025 - tying him to the club until 2030 - emphasising the belief Reds decision-makers have got in the elegant No8.
Nyoni requires game time
But he needs more football than he’s been getting - only 21 minutes across six Premier League appearances last term and 25 more in three Champions League outings.
This is a big season for Nyoni - who joined the Reds’ academy structure from Leicester.
He will never have a better time to shine - with Liverpool eschewing replacements in the transfer market and offering an opportunity to one of the most talented young midfielders around.
