When Michael Edwards return to Anfield, it was not as a member of Liverpool’s staff but as FSG’s CEO of football, and it was made very clear that the aim for the next few years was simple: establish a multi-club model with Liverpool at the summit.

Despite this clear initiative, little progress has been made towards the purchase of a second club, although a deal to buy French side Bordeaux appeared close at one time.

Now, Liverpool could have moved one step closer to the multi-club model they so desire, but not in the conventional sense.

Steven Gerrard could be the key to Liverpool’s multi-club model

Football groups are becoming increasingly common in the Sport, with Manchester City and Chelsea being the best examples of teams in multi-club models domestically, whilst the Red Bull group is the best example on a global scale.

In the traditional model, multiple clubs are owned or funded by the same owner or group, but Liverpool could buck this trend with the appointment of a former club legend.

It looks like Steven Gerrard is set to become the next Blackburn Rovers manager, and this could bring the clubs even closer than they already are.

Blackburn and Liverpool have developed a very good relationship over the past few years, with multiple players being sent on loan to the Lancashire outfit by the Reds.

Harvey Elliott, Tyler Morton and this season Owen Beck have all enjoyed successful spells at Blackburn, and the appointment of Gerrard could solidify this relationship.

What Gerrard’s appointment at Blackburn could mean for Liverpool

Although it is unlikely that any official partnership will be announced, Blackburn could become the ideal proving ground for the Reds up and coming talent.

Gerrard started his managerial career with Liverpool’s academy teams before making the move to Rangers, so it is clear that the club trust him with the next generation of players.

Gerrard is without a doubt one of the greatest players to ever play for Liverpool, so for him to be able to tutor the next generation of Reds would be a special opportunity.

Blackburn have consistently competed in the top half of the Championship over the past few seasons, and a loan move in England’s second tier can be exactly what a player needs to unlock their potential.

Gerrard hasn’t been officially announced as Blackburn’s next boss yet, but if he does get the job it’s easy to see the potential benefits for Liverpool and FSG, who could get their multi-club model without spending a penny.
