Liverpool have their eyes on a £100m World Cup star and he's primed to replace Alexis Mac Allister.

How much longer will Alexis Mac Allister be a Liverpool player? That's not entirely clear, given his contract expires in 2028 and there aren't any talks over a new one.

Whether he sees the deal out, signs something new, or leaves in a transfer is anyone's guess. He does appear to be the most likely midfielder to depart after Curtis Jones, though.

Ryan Gravenberch did get a new deal in March, while there are talks with Dominik Szoboszlai. Mac Allister, supposedly liked by Real Madrid, does feel like the one to make way for new signings.

Which is why it's interesting that Caught Offside report on Liverpool's interest in Bruno Guimaraes. The Newcastle United star would be about as ideal of a replacement as the Reds could dream up, given he's in the prime of his career and completely proven in the Premier League.

His £100m release clause makes things interesting - Liverpool would hope to get something like that for Mac Allister. Is he an upgrade, though? Based on last season, certainly.

But Mac Allister's form in 2024/25 will stick in Liverpool's collective mind. He's one of the best midfielders in world football at his best, the question is just whether he can get back to that.

Ultimately, we do wonder if Liverpool want to take the risk on that. A decent offer for Mac Allister may simply be accepted as the Reds choose to move on and sign a ready-made replacement instead.

Guimaraes would be exactly that. Competition for the Brazilian is fierce but not unbeatable. There's certainly a course here that could ultimately land him at Liverpool.
