Liverpool closing in on historic transfer that will change everything
Liverpool are reportedly closing in on a transfer from their arch rivals.
For much of their history, Everton and Liverpool have shared more than just a city. During the early years, there was a lot of merry-go round between the two clubs.
There have been a total of 29 senior-level footballers making the switch between the two clubs.
While such moves were once relatively common even in the 1980s and 1990s, the landscape of football on Merseyside has changed dramatically in recent decades.
The most recent player to cross the divide was Abel Xavier, who joined Liverpool from Everton in 2002. His transfer remains a significant milestone, not only because of the attention it generated at the time, but because no senior player has followed the same path since.
More than two decades later, Xavier's move still stands as the last direct transfer between the two clubs.
In modern football, transfers between fierce local rivals are often pretty much outlawed. Look at the outrage that is going on right now with Barcola and Real Madrid as they pursue a move for Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez.
Even though they don't compete for titles, the relationship between Everton and Liverpool is no exception.
Sure the rivalry is a little bit friendlier with Everton being the noisy neighbours, however that doesn't mean they are just going to let Liverpool take their best players.
The idea of a senior player moving from Goodison Park to Anfield, or vice versa, now feels almost unthinkable.
Even at academy level, it rarely happens, and when it does it's usually Everton snapping up a player being released by Liverpool - like Anthony Gordon for example.
In this market, a transfer between Everton and Liverpool would be considered one of the most surprising moves in English football.
However, something unprecedented could now be on the way.
For the first time since Xavier made that switch from Goodison Park to Anfield, Everton could be losing a genuinely massive talent and he could be heading to Liverpool.
Yep, that is right, Liverpool are closing in on a groundbreaking and historic deal. The kind of deal that may insight fury from within Everton's ranks, and the kind of deal that will forever make the player who joins the Reds iconic.
According to Peter O'Rourke, Liverpool are now closing in on the transfer of Josh Chigwada from Everton. He's an England U15 international and last season he became the youngest debutant for Everton in the U18 Premier League at just 14-years-old.
Chigwada is a winger, who is very tricky capable of playing on the right and the left-flank. He's regarded as one of the best academy talents at Everton, and that is demonstrated by how willing they were to throw him in and play U18 football.
At Liverpool, competition for those U18 spots is going to be fierce. Josh Abe is a very talented winger, who is expected to feature at least at the beginning for the U18 side.
There are other exciting attackers like Xavier Parker and Erik Farkas at the club as well. However, Chigwada could easily find himself with a role to play.
He's that talented that he will likely be involved with the U16s and the U18s if this deal does that completed.
For now, it's something to keep an eye on. Liverpool are obviously closing in on the deal but until it's done, we cannot say for definite that Chigwada is going to be playing for the Reds next season.
If the move is completed, it's a historic deal that will change everything. Perhaps it's the transfer that ignites more transfers between the two rivals. It's definitely the first high-profile deal between the two clubs in many, many years.
