Incredible news, Injured Liverpool star beats the odds and trains
One Liverpool star has beaten the odds and trained ahead of the Manchester City clash. It's incredible news.
Liverpool were hit by injuries over the international break. The two most notable were Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo, both of whom were sent home early.
Isak’s injury happened quite early on and the fact that Sweden didn’t think they’d risk him for the following two weeks was always a negative sign. A very negative one, really.
Then Gakpo was forced off after a bad tackle and again ruled out of fixtures. The idea that either would be 100 per cent to face Manchester City after the break has always felt like a long shot.
Andoni Iraola essentially confirmed that this week as he talked about the pair.
“I think Alex Isak and Cody Gakpo both have had to leave the national teams with injuries,” he told reporters.
“Now it’s a matter of if they are going to recover in time to help us in the next game or not. But right now they are both injured.”
Jeremy Jacquet trains
One positive note, though: Jeremy Jacquet trained with Liverpool on Thursday. That’s fantastic news, quite honestly, as he missed France’s final fixture through a hamstring problem.
It was always stressed that there was no serious injury and that his absence was largely precautionary but we really, really didn’t expect him to be ready for training on Thursday. Clubs don’t like to take chances on hamstring problems, so the fact Liverpool were confident in letting him take part is a surprise.
It’s a sign that Jacquet is completely ready to go and with that, he’s beaten the odds, really. Even a slight hamstring issue could have been enough to rule him out of the City match, or at least forced him out of training ahead of it and onto the bench for that one.
Instead, Liverpool are set to start the Frenchman. It’s a massive boost while the attack is a bit of mess with its own injury problems. Iraola can count on a somewhat settled defence, though.
And that might be the all-important factor come Sunday.
