Jeremie Frimpong to step in after Liverpool's devastating injury
Jeremie Frimpong is primed to step into the Liverpool team against Manchester City. This comes after a devastating injury.
Jeremie Frimpong has had a tough go of it since arriving at Anfield. The Dutchman joined a team that lacked identity after a massive summer overhaul, one that left the entire squad needing to find new roles for themselves.
That completely failed under Arne Slot, who was unable to put the pieces of the squad together. Injuries didn't help with that, mind.
Now it's Andoni Iraola's turn and one of his first decisions has been to leave Frimpong on the sidelines. He's quickly settled on Ronald Aruajo at right-back, essentially out of position, meaning Frimpong is something of a third-choice player right now.
Conor Bradley, should he recover in time, would likely be the no.1 option at right-back. Then Araujo, then Frimpong. And we're unsure if that's going to change this season.
Though, circumstances are set to thrust Frimpong back into the XI.
Injuries and Jeremie Frimpong
Jeremy Jacquet has an injury, forcing him out of France’s final international break fixture against Belgium on Monday. It’s reportedly a hamstring issue - the kind of injury Liverpool won’t want to take chances on.
Should that keep him out of the clash against Manchester City, Iraola will be forced to make some dramatic changes. Joe Gomez is still working his way back, while Giovanni Leoni hasn’t played for over a year.
It means Araujo is the clear candidate to replace Jacquet in the XI against City, paving the way for Frimpong to then jump in at right-back. This feels like the most logical approach if the Frenchman is indeed unable to play.
There will be a race against the clock for Jacquet to prove his fitness and there’s no question he starts if he’s 100 per cent recovered. Anything short of that, though, and we do think it’ll ultimately give Frimpong a chance back in the team.
And against City? There’s no better way to establish yourself. Frimpong desperately needs a big performance and one that proves he’s a reliable option at the club.
Give that against City during a bit of an injury crisis and it’s all the proof Iraola will need to trust the Dutchman.
