“Going for a player such as" - Stan Collymore on why Liverpool should sign Nunez

Former Liverpool player Stan Collymore has outlined why Benfica's Darwin Nunez would be a good signing for the Reds.

It has been reported that Liverpool are interested in the 22-year-old striker. Collymore believes that Nunez would add quality to Liverpool's forward line.

He further added that if the Reds were to sign Nunez, it would send a message to the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea.

As quoted by Anfield Watch on Twitter, he told The Mirror the following: “Darwin Nunez scores goals and creates bother for defenders, so I’m very excited that Liverpool are in for him as well as Manchester United. Liverpool have to make the odd marquee signing as well to fire shots across the bows of other big clubs.

“I said a few weeks ago that Liverpool can’t just be known as a club that is buying players at £30million or £40 million and hoping that every one of them is going to be the same stunning success that Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota have been.

“Going for a player such as Nunez tells (Manchester) United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Co that Liverpool are in it to win it now even more than they have been in the Jurgen Klopp era. People thought he would be a shoo-in for United but that’s not the case.

“It would be the sort of signing I called for just a few weeks ago. And if it’s a choice between Liverpool and United at the moment then it’s a no-brainer to go to Liverpool. At one club, he’d be in with a chance of winning trophies immediately.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

We completely agree with Collymore's take. Nunez is a very good player. So, if Liverpool were to sign the striker, it would be a statement of intent.

Also, it is important to remember that Manchester City, the champions of England, have just signed Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund for a transfer fee of £67.50 million.

The 21-year-old is a world-class player. Haaland scored 29 goals and registered eight assists in 30 appearances for Borussia Dortmund last season.

Therefore, we strongly believe that Liverpool need to counter the aforementioned signing. Otherwise, Manchester City could win the title yet again.
