Fabrizio Romano shares latest on massive Xabi Alonso to Liverpool story
Fabrizio Romano has shared his latest information on Xabi Alonso’s reported talks with Liverpool.
Will Liverpool approach Xabi Alonso? It's one of the biggest stories in football after the Reds' disappointing campaign was met with their former player losing his job at Real Madrid.
Plenty of reports have indicated that Liverpool will push to hire Alonso, though they've been balanced with plenty suggesting the club will stick with Arne Slot. Really, no one is sure what's going on.
Fabrizio Romano has weighed in with what he's heard, which is essentially nothing. He doesn't believe Liverpool have talked with Alonso since initially approaching him in 2024.
“On Xabi Alonso, I know you have many links, many questions," Romano told his YouTube channel. "Someone is even saying in Germany it’s already done, and Xabi Alonso is very close to Liverpool, but at the moment I’m not aware about that.
“I’m not aware of Xabi Alonso already in talks with Liverpool. Liverpool have not approached Xabi Alonso so far. Then, if they will do that in June or whenever, I will let you know, but at the moment, I’m not aware of Liverpool making any approaches.
“The last time they had conversations was before Arne Slot got appointed as the new Liverpool coach a few years ago."
Romano went on to reiterate that Liverpool plan to review the situation after the season.
“As I always told you at the end of the season, there will be a season review at Liverpool involving everyone to decide what’s going to happen at the club in the future," he said.
Xabi Alonso: Situation Summary
Real Madrid Tenure and Departure
As of 27 April 2026, Xabi Alonso remains out of work following a tumultuous seven-month reign as Real Madrid manager. Appointed in June 2025, Alonso was sacked on 12 January 2026 after a 3–2 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final. Despite a strong start—winning 10 of his first 11 games—his tenure unravelled due to a rapid breakdown in relationships with senior players, most notably an infamous public spat with Vinícius Júnior. He departed by mutual consent with the team second in La Liga, having recorded 24 wins, four draws, and six defeats in 34 matches.
Future Outlook and Recent Links
Alonso’s stock remains high following his historic 2024 double with Bayer Leverkusen. Since his Madrid exit, he has been linked with several elite roles. Reports from late April 2026 suggest he is a top candidate for the Chelsea vacancy after Liam Rosenior's dismissal. While persistent rumours of a move to Liverpool continue, Sky Sports indicates the club currently plans to retain Arne Slot. Alonso recently rejected an approach from Marseille, reportedly holding out for a project with greater structural security for the 2026/27 campaign.
