EXCLUSIVE: Richard Hughes targets TWO Serie A stars for Liverpool
Liverpool could bring two more Italians to Merseyside this summer, Anfield Watch can reveal. Here are all the details.
Anfield Watch understands that Liverpool are targeting two Serie A stars in the upcoming transfer window. Now, that isn’t to say that both arrive at Anfield but they’re very much on the shortlist.

Richard Hughes is pushing the idea, believing there’s tremendous value for money in the Italian top flight. This is something he tried last summer, of course, with the arrival of Federico Chiesa.
Chiesa is thus far the sole first-team signing from Hughes since he took over as Liverpool sporting director in 2024. It’s not a move that’s worked out, though.
Chiesa has barely featured for 30 Premier League minutes under Arne Slot this term. It’s widely expected he’ll depart after one season, in fact.
But Hughes is not put off. He still believes Liverpool can find the right players in a league he’s been associated with since his days in youth football.

Liverpool target Serie A pair
The first player in question is Nicolo Rovella. The Lazio midfielder is viewed as an alternative to Martin Zubimendi, who Liverpool tried and failed to sign last summer.
Zubimendi is now widely expected to join Arsenal. Liverpool, specifically Hughes, believe Rovella is potentially an ideal alternative.
Reports in Italy have mentioned in recent weeks that the Reds have their eyes on Rovella. Anfield Watch understands that’s accurate.
The other player on the shortlist right now is Mateo Retegui, which won’t come as a shock to anyone paying attention to Serie A this season. The striker, who has just turned 26, sits on 24 goals and five assists after 32 top flight fixtures.
This has been something of a breakout season for Retegui, who only managed seven league goals at Genoa last season. Still, Liverpool feel this has been reflective of his overall quality.

The Reds are certainly on the lookout for a striker this summer, too, with Darwin Nunez expected to depart. The likes of Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike have been consistently linked but it may well be Retegui that they hone in on.
