Andoni Iraola given green light to sign 27-goal star in January

Andoni Iraola finally got his first win as Liverpool's boss over the line on Friday.

The Spaniard led his men to a 2-0 win at Portman Road with Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak being the stand-out performers of the game.

However, despite their impressive outing, it's hard to not look back at the summer transfer window and think that Liverpool missed out on a fair few opportunities to bolster their ranks.

Admittedly, their starting XI looks a lot stronger than it did last term but, depth-wise, they could be seen as worse off.

Some of their main squad players such as Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott have been moved on and, with Luis Diaz and Jarell Quansah exiting during the 2025-26 season, there's not a lot of depth among the Reds' ranks anymore.

However, since the January transfer window is set to arrive in the next few months, Liverpool could look to make some more changes with Iraola now being handed the green light to sign one of his long-term targets in the winter window.

Fabian Hurzeler has said that Yankuba Minteh could leave Brighton in January

One of the main areas that Liverpool tried to strengthen this summer was their right-wing.

When Mohamed Salah announced that he was leaving Anfield a year before his contract was up, fans were sent into a frenzy.

Most thought that they'd get a decent fee for his move but, both parties came to an agreement to terminate his deal.

Some rumours were shared about the Egyptian King making his return to Anfield but, that was never going to happen.

This led to many attackers being linked with an Anfield switch such as Yan Diomande, Ismaila Sarr, Bradley Barcola and Michael Olise.

And, while Liverpool got a deal for Barcola over the line, his natural position is on the left-wing so, at the moment, they're still without a natural right-winger.

But, after what Brighton's manager Fabian Hurzeler has just said, it certainly feels like Yankuba Minteh could finally end up joining Liverpool in January.

"If the whole team is successful, Yankuba will get a lot of attention again," he said in quotes relayed by Fabrizio Romano.

"And he can then maybe fulfil his dream in the next transfer window."

At the moment, Minteh is out injured for the next couple of months.

So, the fact that Liverpool didn't choose to sign him for the extortionate price that Brighton were demanding makes a lot of sense.

Nobody knows how good he's going to be upon his return but, by January, it should be clear for everyone to see whether he's worth a move or not.

As mentioned, Liverpool do not have a natural right-winger among their ranks at the moment.

Usually, this would be a massive issue but, with how versatile all of the Reds' attackers are, they should be able to figure things out.

But, if a new right-winger is on top of Liverpool's agenda in January, it would hardly be a surprise.

Minteh is likely to be at the top of their shortlist and, while others such as Sarr could be explored again, with how desperately Liverpool need a right-winger, the prices that they're asked to pay will be extortionate.

So, realistically, if Liverpool want to sign a new right-wing, them going after Minteh makes the most sense.

He's young, got Premier League experience and now, his manager has more or less said that he can go.

Here's hoping that Liverpool can cough up enough money and are in a good enough position to entice him to Anfield in January.
