Liverpool have made an approach for a World Cup star. The Reds are aiming to bring in a midfielder when they can.

There's no question that Liverpool want a new midfielder. And as they should do - there's currently a massive whole in the middle of the pitch and teams are finding it far too easy to attack it.

We saw that in an otherwise good performance against Villarreal this week. Really, though, we've seen it again and again this season and the plan right now is for Trey Nyoni to plug it.

Nyoni, however, is an inexperienced teenager and banking on him to solidify your elite UEFA Champions League team is a risk probably not worth taking just yet. That has Liverpool looking at the transfer market - and they're already making moves.

Liverpool make an approach for Felix Nmecha

Sky Sports Germany claims that Liverpool have made an approach to the entourage of Felix Nmecha. This is typically the first port of call before making a move for a player - they're trying to find out how realistic a move is.

Nmecha is undoubtedly one of the most interesting midfield players in Europe. He's tall, strong, powerful and loves running with the ball - a modern midfielder who looks to win his one-on-one matchups.

The report is keen to stress that Liverpool do have other options in mind and that this certainly isn't a case of them going all-in on Nmecha. It appears he's on the shortlist, though, and could well end up being the pick if any deal for him looks better than deals elsewhere.

All we can say with confidence is that Liverpool want a midfielder and that they're looking at an expensive category of player. The kind who can slot right into the mix with the current group - and possibly from January.

Because that's the other side of this. Liverpool don't just want to know if a move is possible. They want to know when as signing the right player in January could ultimately transform their season ahead of the push for trophies.

And Nmecha may well be that player.
