Why Liverpool rejected multiple MEGA Saudi offers for Darwin Nunez

Liverpool rejected a crazy approach from Al-Hilal for Darwin Nunez. Here's why they said no.

Anfield Watch exclusively revealed that Al-Hilal had put an awful lot of money on the table for Darwin Nunez. The Saudi Arabian side are looking for a Neymar replacement - and thought they'd found one.

This has since been confirmed by the Telegraph, who suggest Nunez would earn £29m per year out there.

Liverpool rejected the offer, however. That bid was worth £70m - a truly incredible number for a player no one seems too sure about.

Fabrizio Romano has since claimed Liverpool turned down a €75m offer from Al Nassr, another club named as a potential destination for the No9 in our exclusive back in January.

The Reds could essentially have recouped what they paid for Nunez with that. But they said no, not happening.

Nunez remained at Liverpool beyond the January transfer window. Things could change again in the summer, of course, but for now, it's as you are.

So why did Liverpool reject such a mammoth amount, then?

Anfield Watch understands the primary reason for rejecting the offer was financial. Liverpool would only sell halfway through the season for a 'ridiculous' price - £85m.

We imagine that's because he'd need replacing and no elite striker was arriving. Thus Nunez also needed to carry that January premium (and then some, if we're honest).

But it wasn't the only reason. Diogo Jota, the squad's other recognised striker, has battled injury problems all season.

Liverpool weren't prepared to let Nunez go while that was the case. Any new arrival would have far too much pressure on them, after all, as they'd instantly be the main man.

And again, it makes sense. Liverpool didn't want to take big risks, not even for massive money, given the team is on the brink of an incredible season.

They remain in three competitions and top the Premier League comfortably. Selling Nunez, for all his faults, could have backfired spectacularly.
