Why Dominik Szoboszlai is viewed as the future Liverpool captain

In a season of turmoil and uncertainty at Anfield in 2025/26, Dominik Szoboszlai emerged as one of the only consistent performers across the campaign.

While Mohamed Salah toiled in his final season in England and new signings Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz got used to their new surroundings at Anfield, the Hungarian was often the team's best player in any given match.

Indeed, he was voted Liverpool's 2025-26 Standard Chartered Men's Player of the Season.

Remarkably, he excelled in a number of positions, even at right-back following the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold and the injury woes of Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley.

He scored 13 goals and provided 12 assists, with some of his goals proving truly memorable. His prowess as a free-kick specialist allowed him to score two of the best you'll ever see in key matches versus Manchester City and Arsenal.

How Szoboszlai carries himself is of importance to Liverpool too. A natural leader, he is one of the club's vice-captains and been tipped as a future captain once Virgil van Dijk departs.

Even the big Dutchman himself had endorsed him for the role.

“Every leadership group is important," Van Dijk said after the 2-2 draw against Newcastle in which Szoboszlai scored a late penalty to earn the draw.

"Obviously there is experience and there is someone in terms of Dom who has been the captain of his country, and that will only help him to be part of this group. He has to take responsibility to take that on his shoulders and it is going to benefit us also in the long run with Szoboszlai signing a new deal. He will be here to take over.”

Following the departures of Salah and Andy Robertson, Szoboszlai forms part of a new leadership group alongside Van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Alisson.

New contract for Szoboszlai

In the summer of 2026, Szoboszlai put speculation surrounding a potential departure to Real Madrid to bed when he signed a lucrative new contract with the club until 2031.

He is now said to be on around £300,000 per week.

Exact figures on his net worth have not been confirmed but it is believed to be between £15m and £20m.

He is known for his style away from the pitch and regularly posts pictures of himself on Instagram wearing expensive clothes and watches.

In the summer, he was spotted wearing an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked.

He is believed to have a large collection of watches, though it is unclear if he has a Swiss luxury Tissot watch like a Tissot Couturier or a PRX Automatic Chronograph.
