"Was unbelievable" - James Milner delighted with Joe Gomez against Newcastle

Liverpool midfielder James Milner was full of praise for Reds defender Joe Gomez after the club secured a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at St James' Park last weekend.

Liverpool had to fight hard to secure the three Premier League points against the Magpies.

Gomez, who replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back for the afternoon, was a key reason why the Reds were able to defeat Newcastle United.

The England international defended well and got forward when he needed to. Gomez ended up registering a WhoScored player rating of 6.95 against the Magpies.

With that being the case, Milner lauded the 24-year-old post-game.

He told the club's official website the following: “For Joey, for example, to come in this morning and perform like he did again was incredible. (He won) headers, they were loading his side, and going forward. I’ve realised over the last few months what a good crosser of the ball he is! It’s pleasing. Joey coming in at right-back was unbelievable again.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

Gomez is a talented player. He can play anywhere in defence.

But, Gomez has struggled to break into Jurgen Klopp's starting XI this season. The 24-year-old has only made 20 appearances for Liverpool across the 2021-22 campaign.

With that being the case, Gomez has been linked with a move away from Anfield. We don't want to see the England international depart Liverpool.

Gomez gives the Reds strength in depth. However, if the defender did want to try a new challenge, we would be quite understanding.

The reality is, Gomez is too good of a player to be sitting on the bench for the majority of a season.

So, it will be interesting to see where the youngster's long-term future lies. We do hope it is with Liverpool.
