An incredible story brewing in Turkey involving two of Liverpool's biggest stars.

Both Galatasaray and Fenerbahce are holding presidential elections this summer. It's a mad time for Turkish football, then, as you can expect wild promises that need delivering.

Each club has a candidate looking to promise a world-class talent. And funnily enough, they've picked Liverpool players for it - two of the best we've ever seen in the Red.

Fotomac says that Galatasaray’s current President Dursun Özbek is eager to sign Virgil van Dijk this summer. He's the sole candidate in elections but views Liverpool's captain as attainable.

It's entirely possible, too. Van Dijk is entering the final year of his deal and there's every chance that a major offer on a long-term contract tempts him into calling time on his Liverpool career.

One that's more clear-cut is from Fenerbahce, with candidate Hakan Safi claiming he will offer Mohamed Salah €20m per year to move to the club. That's again according to Fotomac.

Blockbuster deals for both clubs, then, as they look to make waves in Turkish football this year. Some of Liverpool's biggest-ever stars find themselves at the centre.

Mohamed Salah: Situation Summary

Liverpool Performance and Stats

As of 8 May 2026, Mohamed Salah remains Liverpool’s primary offensive threat, though he has faced a more rotation-heavy role under Arne Slot. The 33-year-old has recorded seven goals and six assists in 25 Premier League appearances this season, maintaining a FotMob rating of 7.08. His most recent standout performance was a 7.7-rated display in the 2–1 Merseyside derby win on 19 April, where he scored the opening goal. However, he was substituted early during the 3–1 win over Crystal Palace and the 3–2 defeat to Manchester United on 3 May, reflecting the manager’s cautious management of the veteran's minutes.

Transfer Speculation

Salah is entering the final weeks of his Liverpool career as his contract expires this June. Reports from 8 May indicate he has received a staggering €20 million-a-year proposal from Fenerbahçe, while San Diego FC and several Saudi Pro League clubs remain in pursuit.

International Standing

Salah captained Egypt to 2026 World Cup qualification with nine goals in the qualifying campaign. He will lead the Pharaohs in Group G against Belgium, Iran, and New Zealand this June.
