"They are so good at doing that" - Conor Coady praises Liverpool's high line

Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Conor Coady has praised Liverpool for keeping a defensive high line against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium yesterday.

Throughout the entire 2021-22 campaign, the Reds have played the offside trap. To be fair to Jurgen Klopp's team, it has worked for the most part.

Liverpool have only conceded 22 goals in 31 Premier League fixtures this season.

But, prior to yesterday, people were wondering how the Reds would set up against Pep Guardiola's team, as they are superb going forward. Manchester City have found the back of the net 72 times in 31 top-flight appearances this season.

Despite that being the case, Liverpool kept a defensive high line during the pivotal (title race) Premier League clash against Manchester City, which impressed Coady.

Coady told Premier League Productions (10/04/22 at 7:10 pm) the following: “That’s all they know.

“That’s all they (Liverpool) ever do (play a high line). You heard Klopp in his interview saying ‘we weren’t going to change’. They certainly did that.

“They do that every single week, Liverpool. They are so good at doing that. They are so calm when defending without the ball. They are usually in control of the game as well.

“I think you have seen that today. I think it’s refreshing to see, two heavyweights as you mentioned, they don’t change and go for it.

“It’s about winning. An outstanding game of football. If I am playing in that team and that’s all I am used to, then that’s the norm for them.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

There are times when Liverpool's defensive high line does get exposed. But, as we have already pointed out, it has worked for the majority of the 2021-22 campaign.

Therefore, we weren't shocked to see Liverpool stick to their guns against Manchester City. Liverpool's performance at the Etihad reiterates that they are a very good side.

In regards to the Premier League, the Reds will face Manchester United at Anfield next (19th of April).
