Richard Hughes couldn't have a bigger signal to go and sign Yan Diomande. Liverpool should get their man.

It’s no secret at this stage that Yan Diomande is ‘the one’ for Liverpool this summer. He’s the star they hope to sign and the one they believe can take some of the responsibility needed in the wake of Mohamed Salah’s departure.

The Athletic is just one outlet making that clear. They’re far from alone in that, however.

There’s always been a problem, though. Paris Saint-Germain are also big fans of Diomande and want to sign him, even with their wealth of wingers.

They’re immense competition for Liverpool as the European champions. And that’s before you factor in their near-limitless wealth.

But have Liverpool actually won this battle? Or at least, are PSG now backing off and giving them a clear path?

L'Equipe reports that PSG now have another target in mind: they want Michael Olise. Others are reporting on their interest in Maghnes Akliouche.

Both play in Diomande’s position and Olise, in particular, would undoubtedly start every match. It genuinely seems that PSG are looking elsewhere and considering other options.

So what more can Richard Hughes need? Go all out. Diomande is a truly special talent and one that will cost a fortune but is worth the risk.

PSG backing away gives Liverpool a clear path and it’s one they should absolutely take.

Yan Diomande: Situation Summary

Transfer Status and Anfield Pursuit

As of 12 June 2026, Yan Diomande remains an RB Leipzig player, although he is widely considered one of Liverpool's primary transfer targets this summer. Following the departure of Mohamed Salah, Liverpool’s recruitment team has identified the 19-year-old Ivorian winger as an ideal long-term successor on the right flank. Reports confirmed on 11 June that Liverpool have submitted their first formal bid to RB Leipzig for the teenager. While Leipzig are reportedly holding out for a valuation in the region of €130 million, and PSG also remain in competition, Liverpool are described as "really pushing" to secure his services.

Background and Performance

Born in Abidjan in 2006, Diomande moved to the US as a teenager to train at the DME Academy before joining Spanish side CD Leganés in early 2025. He moved to RB Leipzig in July 2025 for €20 million, where he enjoyed a breakthrough 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign, recording 12 goals and nine assists in 36 appearances across all competitions. He is highly regarded for his explosive pace, dribbling ability, and defensive work rate. Diomande is currently with the Ivory Coast national team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, having featured in a friendly against France on 4 June.
