It's happening, Julian Ward opens talks to sign extraordinary midfielder
Liverpool might finally be doing it, Julian Ward is reportedly opening talks with an extraordinary midfielder.
The Reds have never really been in such a tricky position before. They have an abundance of midfielders. Some very talented ones.
However, due to a change in managers, there is a strong argument to make that the two midfielders who Liverpool have banked their future on do not really suit Andoni Iraola's style of play.
The Spaniard came in with a clear vision to use a double pivot. His requirement for these double pivots is to play the ball progressively and to release the ball quickly.
Iraola's entire philosophy relies on quick football. He wants his midfielders to play line-breaking passes and to take risks on the ball.
Why Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai do not suit Iraola's midfield
The problem Julian Ward faces is that his predecessor Richard Hughes tied down both Gravenberch and Szoboszlai to long-term deals.
Now they are on huge wages, some of the best paid at the club and yet neither looks the best suited to play in Iraola's midfield.
Gravenberch has looked sloppy and out of sync playing in that double pivot role. He holds onto the ball for far too long and isn't capable of making the crisp line-breaking passes that Trey Nyoni has been doing time and time again.
Szoboszlai is very similar in that sense. He does take risks on the ball but he makes decisions a lot slower. Defensively, he isn't as positionally sound as someone like Alexis Mac Allister or Nyoni.
Julian Ward opening talks to sign Lamine Camara
The solution in order to fix this problem is a tricky one. Mac Allister will likely have be offered a new deal, and one of Gravenberch or Szoboszlai will have to be sacrificed and sold.
In the meantime, Liverpool will also need to bolster their options.
The only way Ward can do that is by entering the transfer market. By the looks of it that is what he is preparing to do.
According to Tuttomercatoweb, Liverpool are set to initiate talks to sign Lamine Camara.
The extraordinary Senegalese midfielder would be tailor made for Liverpool. Camara wins a lot of duels, he is excellent on the ball and defensively he plays just the way Iraola wants his midfielders to play.
Liverpool were already interested in Camara in the summer so this is one to keep a close eye on.
