Michael Edwards highly unlikely to be final blockbuster Liverpool exit

Liverpool are set to see even more exits after Michael Edwards quit his role at FSG.

Michael Edwards has quit as FSG's CEO of football. The former Liverpool sporting director took over that position back in early 2024 and principally to oversee a multi-club project.

However, Liverpool have never actually found that second club for things to become 'multi-club'. It now appears they never will and Edwards has departed.

Exactly what this immediately means is unclear. It's not even obvious whether FSG will replace Edwards as his role isn't currently necessary.

On top of it all, this is highly unlikely to be the final exit. Richard Hughes, the current sporting director, is set to depart the club next year according to several outlets, including the BBC.

Al-Hilal intend to hire Hughes, who was hired by Edwards back in 2024. The two have known one another for over 20 years, something that can be said by quite a few on the books at Liverpool and FSG.

But what now? Will all the similar hires depart? Liverpool will need to hire or promote someone new to lead the club, and that also puts Andoni Iraola's future into doubt.

No one is sure who will be running the club going forward and FSG need to figure that out. Hughes is almost certainly following shortly, making time of the essence here.

It's all a massive blow, too. Liverpool faced similar uncertainty back in 2024 when Jurgen Klopp announced he was off, but FSG got ahead of it with the appointment of Edwards and company long before Klopp left.

This time around? The club aren't ahead of things at all and will now need to make some very difficult decisions very quickly. Exactly what that means going forward is anyone's guess.
