Liverpool wonderkid to be handed new role by Andoni Iraola amid contract talks

Rio Ngumoha is undoubtedly one of the most exciting talents in world football, but he has faced a tough start to the season.

Despite being one of the brightest parts of Liverpool’s dismal 2025/26 campaign, Ngumoha has struggled for minutes under Andoni Iraola and now finds himself behind £123 million signing Bradley Barcola in the pecking order.

Rio has played just 22% of the available minutes in the Premier League this season and is yet to register a goal or an assist in any competition.

The 18-year-old's talent is clear to see though, and Liverpool’s priority remains continuing to develop their wonderkid into a superstar.

Rio Ngumoha’s Liverpool role going forward

Talks are reportedly underway to tie Ngumoha down to an extended contract on improved terms at Anfield in order to fend off interest from several of Europe’s top clubs, including Arsenal.

Progress on a new deal has been slow however, leading some to suggest that the teenager’s lack of minutes this season could be a roadblock in negotiations.

According to a new report from Football Insider, the youngster is content with his situation at Anfield and will not push for a move away any time soon, with the promise of a regular starting role in place.

Rio could earn his second cap for England this international break, and a good performance on the international stage could accelerate negotiations over a fresh deal.

The winger’s current deal isn’t set to expire until 2028, but the 20-time Premier League champions are keen to tie him down to a longer deal to make sure his future lies in Merseyside.

With a lack of depth on the wings, minutes will keep coming Rio’s way and it is likely only a matter of time until the Englishman finds the back of the net again for the Reds.
