Liverpool transfer news: World-Cup winner is coming to Liverpool
A World Cup winner is coming to Liverpool.
Liverpool will need attacking reinforcements this summer and they could find it through a World Cup winning forward.
Missing out on Yan Diomande represents a major blow for the Reds.
The 19-year-old was not simply another player on the club’s transfer shortlist. He looked like someone who matched almost every quality Liverpool were searching for as they begin preparing for the future beyond Mohamed Salah.
Young, explosive, productive and with significant potential to improve, Diomande had emerged as one of the most exciting attacking talents available on the market. His profile made him an ideal fit for Liverpool’s long-standing recruitment model: identifying elite potential before a player reaches his peak.
His decision to choose Paris Saint-Germain now leaves the Reds having to reassess their options and return to the market in search of alternatives.
Bradley Barcola is the obvious name being considered, but securing a deal for the PSG forward would be far from straightforward. Even if the French club were open to negotiations, there are questions over whether Barcola truly solves Liverpool’s biggest long-term issue.
While Barcola has played on the right side, his strongest performances have generally come from the left wing.
That is a position where Liverpool already have options in Cody Gakpo and highly rated academy prospect Rio Ngumoha. Instead of replacing Salah’s role, Barcola would arguably strengthen an area where the Reds are already well stocked.
That is what makes Diomande’s rejection so frustrating for Liverpool. Finding a young right winger with his blend of pace, end product, versatility and potential is incredibly difficult.
Players with that exact profile rarely become available, and Liverpool may now have to look deeper into the market to find a solution capable of replacing one of the greatest players in the club’s history.
And the answer to the problem may come through a World Cup winner.
The World Cup has always held a special place in Liverpool's history. While success at club level has often defined the Reds, the tournament has also seen some of Anfield's greatest players reach the pinnacle of international football.
The first was Roger Hunt, who played a key role in England's historic triumph on home soil in 1966.
The 1998 tournament saw France crowned world champions with Bernard Diomède in Liverpool's squad, before Spain's unforgettable success in 2010 brought medals for Pepe Reina and Fernando Torres.
Xabi Alonso also lifted the trophy in South Africa, although he had left Liverpool the previous summer.
The club then had to wait more than a decade for another World Cup winner to walk through the doors.
That changed in the summer of 2023 when Liverpool signed Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton, just six months after he had played a starring role in Argentina's dramatic victory over France in the 2022 World Cup final. Mac Allister became the first reigning World Cup winner to join Liverpool since Xabi Alonso's era and quickly established himself as one of the team's most influential players.
Now another World Cup winner could be on his way to Anfield. Spain's victory over France has pretty much guaranteed it.
The impressive performances of the Spanish team, with their resolute defence and their triumph in the Euro 2024 finals will see them lift the trophy this summer.
Whether it's England or Argentina in their way, it won't matter.
And Spain's victory will subsequently guarantee a World Cup winner coming to Anfield.
Everyone has forgotten about Victor Munoz, an injury has prevented him from playing a key role for Spain. But no one will take the medal away from him, and when he finally joins Liverpool this summer, he will add his name to a distinguished list. In the process, he can also help Iraola solve his big headache in attack.
