Surprise contender emerges in race to sign Mo Salah

Liverpool have lost Mohamed Salah.

The Egyptian King departed on a free transfer when his contract expired at the end of June. Salah, 34, is now free to pick his next club after reaching an agreement to rip up his £400k per week deal one year early.

The all-time Liverpool legend has been linked with moves to Al-Ittihad and Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia while teams in Europe including Juventus, Roma, Galatasaray and Fenerbahce would dearly love to have him on board.

Salah future soon to be decided

Salah is coming off the back of a FIFA World Cup campaign with Egypt - where he helped the Pharaohs reach the round-of-16 stage before elimination by Argentina last week.

The transfer race will surely heat up once the two-time African footballer of the year completes his summer break. And right now there remains the possibility that Salah heads BACK to the United States following the World Cup campaign.

Because the Athletic is reporting that the left-footed attacker is a surprise target for ambitious Major League Soccer side Sporting Kansas City.

Sporting Kansas City want Salah deal

While we are already aware of interest from San Diego FC and Inter Miami - the Kansas City-based side are a new contender for Salah’s signature.

“Sporting Kansas City has emerged as the top suitor for Mohamed Salah in MLS as the club plots an ambitious summer,” the report reads.

“Any MLS club signing Salah is viewed as a longshot due to the Saudi Pro League’s heavy interest in bringing him to the league — and that’s if Salah opts to depart European soccer this summer at all.

“Sources indicate Salah prefers to remain in Europe, but, as he mulls his options, he remains open to a move to MLS.

“Multiple MLS clubs registered at least some interest in Salah, but Sporting currently sits in pole position to sign the Egyptian star if he comes across the Atlantic.”

It’s also been reported that the new SKC majority owner - Peter Mallouk - is the son of Egyptian immigrants.

It would take a monumental effort for the outsiders to land a player of Salah’s calibre and right now there are no suggestions that they are close to landing a deal.

But the interest is there and the lure of MLS would surely be strong for a player of Salah’s international renown.
