Liverpool's chances of signing €25m Denzel Dumfries take major step forward

Liverpool have got a profound need to make adjustments in the right-back slot this summer.

Their plans to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold have failed. With the 27-year-old joining Real Madrid for £10m the club spent £29.5m on Jeremie Frimpong and gave a new contract to Conor Bradley.

Frimpong, 25, is not a natural full-back and - besides - has been in and out of the side all season long owing to fitness concerns.

Bradley has been sidelined since January with a serious leg injury - and has never been the most reliable from a fitness point of view.

Joe Gomez has therefore had more football this season than he might have otherwise expected while Arne Slot has been forced to use midfielders at right-back as well.

Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Curtis Jones are among the midfielders to have played there for the Premier League champions this term.

Dumfries is a tantalising prospect

Clearly work is needed in that sector and there may be developments afoot in the case of Denzel Dumfries.

The Dutchman, 30, is coming off another successful season with Inter Milan - winning the domestic double for Cristian Chivu’s side.

Under contract until 2028 the marauding right-sider nonetheless has got a €25m clause active in his contract throughout the month of July.

Liverpool are among the teams linked with making a move - and at that price a deal for one of the world’s best right-backs would be hard to resist.

Inter Milan line up Dumfries replacement

Now Gazzetta dello Sport has outlined Inter’s plans over Dumfries. They will be powerless to prevent approaches from clubs like Liverpool should they choose to make a bid.

And - therefore - the Milan giants are lining up alternatives.

The report claims that Cagliari’s Marco Palestra - on loan from Atalanta - is a target for the double-winners after a fine breakthrough season.

Of course the 21-year-old is also reported to be on Liverpool’s list but of the two Dumfries is the more proven talent.

Inter look like they are planning for Dumfries’ departure - which means that Liverpool could well be stepping up plans to take advantage of that tantalising clause.
